KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — A Tennessee police officer has fatally shot a man who confronted him with a knife, authorities said.
Knoxville Police responded Wednesday to a report of a man acting erratically and causing a disturbance at a business, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said in a statement.
When police arrived, the man came out of the business with at least one knife and confronted an officer who fired and struck the man, the bureau said. The 41-year-old man was transported to a hospital, but later died of his injuries, the statement said. The officer wasn’t injured.
Knoxville police spokesman Scott Erland told news outlets that the initial report said the man was “acting erratically and potentially aggressively” at a gas station.
The officer was placed on routine leave while the shooting is investigated, officials said.
